At its annual meeting in March 2021, the Regional Technical Committee (RTC) recommended
facilitating knowledge management and the sharing of best practices developed by countries, as part of the sharing of SWEDD project achievements between beneficiaries financed by the World Bank. This recommendation was reaffirmed at the 2022 CRP, which highlighted the need to strengthen experience-sharing mechanisms between countries through a virtual resource platform and the creation of thematic exchange forums.
In response to this call, the World Bank, which is financing the project, mandated UNFPA, as the project's technical assistance partner, to set up a mechanism to encourage the sharing of experience and skills between countries.
It was within this framework, and in close consultation with the SWEDD countries and the World Bank, that the process of setting up a knowledge management platform was conceived.
The aim of this platform is to improve the management of the knowledge generated by SWEDD by capitalizing on the project's achievements and disseminating the resulting best practices. The knowledge management platform includes two components: resource documentation, which will provide beneficiaries and users with relevant documents produced by the SWEDD project, and the Community of Practice, organized into sub-communities according to SWEDD's key themes.
To promote better Knowledge Management and better operationality of the Community of Practice, the STR in collaboration with the countries and regional organizations that are part of the SWEDD project, including WAHO, have planned a series of webinars starting in 2024.
The choice of themes for the webinars on the SWEDD project's achievements was made on the basis of the different components, and also according to the level of maturity or performance of the countries involved. The rigorous documentation of SWEDD project intervention processes is an asset that will also serve as a basis for knowledge sharing within the framework of the webinars.
Rationale for choosing Côte d'Ivoire
As part of the SWEDD project in Côte d'Ivoire, the Ministry of Education, a major actor in component 1.2, is responsible for the sub-project "Improving
young girls' retention
in lower secondary education". This Education sub-project aims to strengthen: (i) the supervision and learning conditions of girls in school and (ii) the knowledge of young girls in school in sexual and reproductive health and life skills.
In response to the above two specific objectives, the Ministry of Education has identified three key activities which implementation has produced convincing results: catering support to address the food vulnerability of certain adolescent girls and young women in school
;
running safe school spaces designed to reinforce the life skills of teenage girls and young women in classes 6 to 3, for whom Ministry of Education statistics have regularly shown that 2/3 of school pregnancies involved girls in this cycle of education over the period 2013 to 2015; and finally, coaching girls through pedagogical support courses in Mathematics and French, with the aim of raising the low level of girls or those with little talent in these fundamental disciplines.
To achieve more significant results in this sub-project to keep girls in lower secondary education, the Ministry has taken the school ecosystem into account, by developing a strategy to (i) involve school
stakeholders
in implementing activities, (ii) capitalize
on
the potential of each
actor
and (iii) ensure good collaboration between the school and its external partners around the project's objectives.
In addition to the coordination, monitoring and judicial management of the project's activities, the school environment in which the project's activities take place relates to the school year calendar, priority teaching activities and extracurricular activities.
By taking into account the complex school environment and skilfully planning the development of life skills, SWEDD 2 has achieved some very encouraging mid-term results: (a) 97.9% of girls have been mentored thanks to the completion of 2 cohorts in 2023, i.e. 69496 out of 70980 planned; (b) more than 3,000 girls were fed in 15 colleges, and 97% of these school feeding beneficiaries attended class on the 35 days of feeding in 2023; and (c) in 2023, 0.08% (55) of girls mentored (6,506) by the SWEDD project became pregnant, compared with 1.14% (1,674) of non-mentored girls (81,122) in the 212 schools. The mentoring program reduced the risk of pregnancy by more than 26 times.
Analysis of the strategy
implemented
in Côte d'Ivoire to keep girls in school has highlighted lessons learned
such as (i) the existence of an enabling
environment is a real asset in keeping girls in school, and (ii) the involvement of school stakeholders in implementing interventions encourages massive participation and sufficient
uptake
of skills among beneficiaries.
It is this experience of innovative approaches to keeping girls in school
implemented
in Côte d'Ivoire that will be the focus of this second webinar of the SWEDD project.

The webinar aims to share best practices and lessons learned from experiences with “innovative approaches to keeping girls in school” in Côte d'Ivoire.
Specifically, it will:
Share results and lessons learned from the experience on “keeping girls in school” in Côte d'Ivoire;
Promote discussions between SWEDD countries and project partners on innovative approaches;
Propose
takeaways
for improving “keeping girls in school” in the countries.
Expected results
Three main results are expected from this second webinar session:
Participants' deeper understanding of the strategy for keeping girls in school;
Best practices relating to the implementation of innovative approaches to keeping girls in school identified ;
Issues for sustaining girls' achievements in school discussed and understood.
Methodology
This session will be led by the Ministry of Education and the UCP (Country Coordination Unit) of Côte d'Ivoire
, with a moderator appointed by the STR (REGIONAL TECHNICAL SECRETARIAT).
It will take the form of a presentation, followed by contributions and exchanges with all participants, i.e. representatives of SWEDD countries, implementing partners, regional organizations, partners and academics.
The featured country will first give a presentation of 40 to 45 minutes maximum, covering the following topics

School stakeholder involvement strategies;
Enabling
environment: contextualized strategies in Côte d'Ivoire;
Favourable institutional arrangements ;
Role and responsibilities of external actors;
Results

Lessons learned
This will be followed by
discussions
with other SWEDD countries, who will contribute their own ideas. Resource persons, in particular experts who have taken part in various activities on keeping girls in school (training, technical support missions, evaluation, etc.) will also be invited to share their experiences.
At the end, a summary of the webinar presentation and discussion will be shared with countries and posted on the knowledge management platform

Choice of speakers
The representative of the Ministry of Education, SWEDD focal point, under the leadership of the
PCU
, will be responsible for preparing the content of the PPT support and for involving the UNFPA country office.
The STR, as organizer, will act as moderator of the session to ensure that the exchanges run smoothly.
SWEDD countries with experience of keeping girls in school may be invited to take the floor before participants are invited to speak on the subject. To this end, SWEDD countries that will be asked to share their experience on the subject will receive an official bilateral email well in advance of the webinar, to
help them get
