FOR THE REGIONAL ROUNDTABLE ON RESOURCE MOBILIZATION

Background
The World Bank, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the West African Health Organization (WAHO) support seven Sahel countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Chad)
in

the implementation of the Sahel Women's Empowerment and Demographic Dividen
d
project

(SWEDD).
The overall goal of the SWEDD project is to improve the empowerment of women and adolescent girls,
and to
enhance their access to quality maternal and child health
and
family planning services. It also works towards reducing gender inequality in the Sahel region. The SWEDD
project
is structured around three primary components:
Generate demand for reproductive, maternal, neonatal and child health, and nutrition (RMNCHN) services by promoting social and behavioral change and the empowerment of women and adolescent girls;
Reinforce the regional
provision
of RMNCHN commodities a
s well as
the training and deployment of qualified health workers; and
Reinforce advocacy and
high-level
dialogue and strengthen capacities for policy development and the project’s implementation.
Since its official launch on November 2, 2015, the SWEDD project has grown rapidly and has achieved remarkable progress
in just a few years
.
These promising results
were the basis
for
the
extension
of the project
in six countries
, in part
because of the
additional
positive impact of the interventions on peace and security.
However, t
he
program
extension still re
quires
greater
investments. Countries must
therefore strengthen and scale-
up partnerships both at the national and international levels.
Building on this, t
he
States and
international community
have
also

expressed
an interest and willingness to extend the SWEDD project
the 11 countries of the Sahel and beyond.
In response to the increasing needs highlighted by countries and
their respective H
eads of
S
tate, the Regional Steering Committee, UNFPA and the World Bank
will
conven
e a round
table
on resource mobilization,
on the sidelines of

the
African Union
Summit in Niamey, Niger
on 6
July 2019.
To ensure the success of
this process, a series of road
shows
conducted
in member states was launched in May to meet with potential donors and secure financial, material and technical resources ahead of the
roundtable
, in order to scale-up the SWEDD project.
